An RMC plant depends on two categories of assets that simply cannot be down when a pour is committed: the batching plant itself and the fleet of transit mixers that deliver what it produces. For a lot of plants, maintenance on both is reactive by default the first sign of trouble is the breakdown itself, and the repair happens under time pressure, against a schedule that was already committed to a customer.
The real cost of reactive maintenance
Reactive maintenance is expensive in ways that don’t show up as a single line item. A mixer breakdown mid-delivery doesn’t just cost the repair it costs the missed delivery window, the customer conversation that follows, and often a rushed decision about whether to repair or replace an asset with no real data behind it either way. A batching plant failure is worse: it can halt production entirely, at exactly the moment commitments are already on the board.
The underlying issue is rarely the maintenance team’s competence. It’s that undocumented, breakdown-driven maintenance means there is no register connecting an asset’s history, its usage pattern, and its next likely failure point so every breakdown arrives as a surprise, even when the asset was giving warning signs all along.
What a structured maintenance discipline looks like
